[CNA] Parliamentary debate on political salaries continues

SINGAPORE : The Workers' Party's (WP) proposal to benchmark ministerial pay to the Member of Parliament (MP) allowance came under scrutiny in Parliament on Tuesday. Leading the charge was MP Vikram Nair from the ruling People's Action Party (PAP). Mr Nair, who is MP for Sembawang GRC, rebutted the opposition party's proposal, saying it was similar to the level proposed by the Committee to Review Ministerial Salaries. The WP had recommended paying a minister S$55,000 a month. Mr Nair noted that this was higher than the committee's proposed starting pay of S$46,750. He said the difference was S$8,250 a month or S$99,000 over one year. This is close to two months' bonus under the new scheme. Mr Nair also disagreed with the WP's choice to base ministerial salaries on MP allowance, as running a ministry requires different skills and experiences. It is because of that, he said, ...
