Beat the traffic with Google Maps app: Now, it will use real-time traffic information to offer up to two routes

WASHINGTON - Motorists can now find the best routes to avoid traffic congestion by using Google Maps Navigation, Google announced on Monday. The free Android application previously generated the route based solely on the shortest mileage to a destination. Now, it will use real-time traffic information to offer up to two routes showing the mileage and travel times. "Our routing algorithms will also apply our knowledge of current and historical traffic to select the fastest route from those alternates," said Google Maps software engineer Roy Williams. "That means that Navigation will automatically guide you along the best route given the current traffic conditions." This feature is currently available only in North America and Europe, where the real-time traffic data and Navigation application are available.
