Polar bear cub, rejected by its parents, is reared by hand in China

LONDON - A female polar bear cub born on New Year's Day is being hand-reared in China after being rejected by her mother. The cub is in stable condition, according to staff at Penglai Ocean and Polar Region World, an aquarium in China's eastern Shandong Province. Weighing just over half a kilogram the bottle-fed female is being kept in an incubator after suffering from problems with her digestive, respiratory and nervous systems since her Russian-born parents rejected her. The cub has also been suffering from severe malnutrition due to the absence of her mother's milk. Aquarium staff are optimistic about her future however, stating that the cub is no longer in critical condition and will be ready for her first public appearance in six months' time.
