Lawrence Wong "surprised" by WP's pay clarification

SINGAPORE: Minister of State for Defence and Education Lawrence Wong said he is surprised to read the Workers' Party's (WP) clarification on the remarks by Non-Constituency Member of Parliament (NCMP) Gerald Giam in Parliament. Mr Wong was referring to a report published in The Straits Times on Saturday. WP had presented an alternative ministerial pay formula in Parliament, using the civil service MX9 salary of around S$11,000 as a benchmark for MP allowances. A minister's pay would be multiples of that sum. In the Straits Times report, Mr Giam said WP was aware the MX9 pay was pegged to high income earners in the private sector. But in a Facebook posting made on Saturday, Mr Wong said the party had argued in Parliament that the MX9 represented the "general wage levels" of Singaporeans.
