Insurance cheat involved family in scam

SINGAPORE: The court on Wednesday sent out a deterrent message to insurance cheats when it jailed the mastermind of an elaborate motor insurance racket 32 months. Forty-eight-year-old Ong Ai Peng got 19 accomplices - including his wife and teenage daughters - to pose as phantom passengers in various motor vehicle accidents to make fraudulent injury claims against insurance companies. More than S$180,000 was involved in the scams which occurred between April 2006 and September 2009. This led to insurers paying out more than S$65,000. District Judge Kessler Soh said the case involving Ong, a tow truck driver, was more serious than a recent similar motor insurance racket involving Phang Choon Meng. Ong roped in his wife, teenage daughters and their friends in the racket, and led them down a criminal path. Moreover, Ong was not a first-time offender and had previous dishonesty...
