Changi Motorsports hub hits fresh set of obstacles

IN 2007, the Government announced plans to call for design tenders for a permanent race track in Changi. But a request for proposals was called only in 2009, owing to delays due to market research on the hub's potential. Three groups put in bids, and SG Changi was picked by a panel of government agencies in March 2010. SG Changi signed a contract with the Singapore Sports Council (SSC) to design, finance, build and manage the hub on a 41ha site. The project was to be ready by the end of last year. The facility's centrepiece was to be a permanent track at least 3.5km long that could host any kind of race except Formula One. SG Changi also had to stage at least two international events, such as MotoGP and Japan's Super GT, annually. But the project, managed by a Japanese-backed group, ran into problems early last year.
