With most businesses closed on the first day of the festive season, shops stayed open throughout the weekend to cater to the eleventh-hour demand. Store fronts decked out in festive banners, lanterns and tinsel carried makeshift signs with marked-down prices, with vendors still calling out enthusiastically to customers right up till yesterday afternoon. 'We usually come on the last day so that the prices are a bit lower,' said housewife Jean Koh, 55, who was shopping for food and decorations in Chinatown.
