Jail for man who also used wife,daughters in insurance fraud

SINGAPORE - The mastermind of an elaborate motor insurance scam was jailed for 32 months yesterday, as the courts concurred with the prosecution's call for a deterrent sentence. Ong Ai Peng, 48, had recruited 19 accomplices - roping in even his wife and teenaged daughters - in posing as phantom passengers in several motor vehicle accidents in order to make fraudulent injury claims against insurance companies. More than S$180,000 was involved in the insurance scams, which occurred between April 2006 and September 2009. They led to insurers paying out more than S$65,000 in claims. Pressing for a deterrent sentence, Deputy Public Prosecutor Hon Yi said: "The need to prevent and curtail such crimes is necessary to prevent a steady rise in motor vehicle insurance premiums, a factor which has an impact on a large proportion of the general public."
