Bali's Kuta beach declared safe again after bacterial bloom clears

Kuta Beach (picture) has been declared safe for swimming again following bacterial contamination over the weekend which turned the water to a turgid brown, reported the Jakarta Globe. Officials at the government-run Ngurah Rai Fish Quarantine Laboratory said the bacterial bloom was likely caused by large amounts of waste discharged into the sea reacting to unusually high temperatures, with the resulting drastic drop in the pH level killing off large amounts of plankton. The authorities had advised against swimming in the waters because of a risk of skin infections or respiratory problems. The lab also said it is testing the water from other Bali beaches, particularly those popular with tourists.
