Oh, THAT George Clooney. Could he possibly get any more likeable, charming or handsome? It's maddening how the director-actor gets away with tackling both the big, slick blockbuster alongside the smaller but spectacularly earnest movies - all while advocating life-changing politics, promoting philanthropy and selling Nespresso machines. But that he does, and, amazingly, manages to retain more than his fair share of class and respect along the way. In Alexander Payne's The Descendants, Clooney steps outside his comfort zone of self-composed cool as Matt King, a wealthy descendant of one of Hawaii's oldest families who must decide between selling gorgeous untouched family land to capitalist property developers so that he and his extended family of cousins can become ludicrously rich or hold on to history.
