Owners abandon household pets as they spring-clean for Chinese New Year

WHEN CHARITIES AND THRIFT SHOPS TURN INTO DUMPING GROUNDS Whenever a festive season like Christmas or Chinese New Year comes around, charities and thrift shops brace themselves. While appreciative of the usable items left in their bins, they are also seeing more unwanted stuff that can hardly be reused or refurbished. Some told The Sunday Times they do get 'rubbish' instead of second-hand goods, adding that this unethical practice is not unique to Singapore. A volunteer who declined to be named said: 'Donations should be stuff that you would continue to use yourself, but which are not needed at the moment.' Staff and volunteers at charities in other countries also get piles of dirty clothing, broken electrical goods and damaged furniture when people spring-clean for the holidays.
