Government is fair to all races, says Malaysian Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi

Kuala Lumpur — Malaysia does not impose any restrictions on non-Muslims and is fair to all races, Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said yesterday in response to United States President Barack Obama’s advice to the country’s leadership. On his visit to Malaysia on Sunday as part of a four-country swing through Asia, Mr Obama had said Malaysia needed to ensure equal opportunities for its non-Muslim communities if it wanted to prosper. Yesterday, Dr Ahmad Zahid defended the government’s record towards non-Muslims. “Equal opportunity is given to non-Muslims and the government is fair to all religions,” he said at a press conference. “I do not think that there are any obstacles to practising religion in Malaysia.” On Sunday, Mr Obama — the first serving US President to visit Malaysia in nearly 50 years — had said the country could not progress if there were groups within the po...
