Unsolicited SMSes, shocking data roaming bills & uncertainty over actual broadband speeds could be a thing of the past

SINGAPORE - Unsolicited SMSes, shocking data roaming bills and uncertainty over actual broadband speeds - the bugbear of consumers here - could soon be a thing of the past. The Government yesterday announced a slew of measures to protect consumers against such occurrences. First, it plans to require mobile operators to offer a barring service against unsolicited chargeable SMS - or premium rate services (PRS) - so consumers can block them. Such services include mobile ring tones, quizzes or game downloads, which cost about S$3 for each message received. When it comes to prevention of unknown incurrence of high data roaming charges, the Infocomm Development Authority will require all mobile operators to offer a free data roaming service suspension option.
