Shrinking population will hurt Singapore's economy, says former prime minister Lee Kuan Yew

Calling the task of increasing the country's population its 'biggest challenge', he said that when he became prime minister in 1959, more than 62,000 babies were born in that year, from a population half Singapore's current size. The population now stands at 5.18 million, with citizens forming 3.26 million. But last year, only about 36,000 babies were born. Its trendy now to have children. It is how many children that's the problem. If you want each couple to have 3 kids, it is not difficult. Access to very affordable quality education, bigger and cheaper apartments or HDBs allocated for families who have more children, create high quality government childcare facilities, allow for 2 maids, lower maid levies, tax breaks for larger vehicles, free insurance for kids till they are 18, full subsidy for medical care during and after pregnancy. People want to have children, but if you want a first world economy and have people (especially the educated) making babies, then its has to be pro family. There is no sense in considering the extra burden when you are comfortable with 1 or 2 kids. This is an investment for our future of our country and should not be considered simply as welfare. The benefits will outweigh the costs and a holistic approach will have our future generations becoming individuals that power our economy.
