Hong Kong lawmakers submit proposal to double their pay despite voter discontent

Hong Kong - Lawmakers in Hong Kong have submitted a proposal to almost double their salaries despite voters' discontent with their performance. A Legislative Council sub-committee is proposing that lawmakers' wages be pegged to about half the pay of government ministers from October, the South China Morning Post reported on Saturday. Legislators earn HK$73,150 (S$11,700) a month. Their proposed salary is around HK$141,000 a month. It said the proposed pay rise was 'to attract high-fliers from various sectors to become lawmakers'. The remuneration is on top of a HK$28,020 annual medical allowance and a gratuity worth 15 per cent of the total pay at the end of their four-year term. But a December poll by the University of Hong Kong found 49 per cent of 1,035 respondents dissatisfied with lawmakers' performance, the Post said.
