The number of local workers going for training fell to a seven-year low last year: MOM

THE number of local workers going for training fell to a seven-year low last year, according to a Ministry of Manpower (MOM) survey. Only 27 per cent received training and there are two reasons for the slide, said MOM in its latest labour force report. One was the buoyant economy, which had prompted employers to scale down training to address their immediate shortage of workers to meet the greater workload. The other was the November 2010 expiry of the Government's Skills Programme for Upgrading and Resilience, which gave financial incentives for skills upgrading. MOM had polled 3,000 Singaporeans and permanent residents between the ages of 15 and 64 for their participation in job-related structured training during the 12-month period which ended last June.
