7,000 Hindu devotees celebrate Thaipusam festival

7,000 Hindus celebrated the annual Thaipusam festival on Tuesday to honour Lord Murugan, one of the most important Hindu deities. -- ST PHOTO: NURIA LING By Tay Suan Chiang A recent knee operation did not stop Hindu devotee Naresh Pillai, from carrying a 10kg kavadi at the Thaipusam festival. The 32-year-old safety coordinator was carrying the kavadi for the 11th year, but said 'the feeling is different each time'. The kavadi - an intricate structure of steel and wood - is attached to the carrier's body using 108 vels or spikes. This year, Mr Pillai said he was 'physically challenged' as he was still recovering from a knee operation he had last October, but he decided to proceed with it as 'a fulfilment to my vows and as a form of thanksgiving'.
