BANGKOK (AP) - The yen slid Friday after a major earthquake struck northeastern Japan with withering force. Even before the massive temblor, world stock markets were skidding lower, driven by a large drop on Wall Street and unexpectedly high inflation in China. Oil prices dropped below $102 barrel as the quake triggered knee-jerk flight to safety selling in regional markets. The dollar jumped as high as 83.29 yen in Tokyo, and also gained against other Asian currencies, before slipping back to 82.80 yen. Japan's Nikkei 225 index was sharply down, losing 1.7 percent to close at 10,254.43. Some of those losses came at the end of the trading day, just 14 minutes after the quake hit, unleashing huge tsunami waves that deluged the country's eastern coast.
