Opposition parties need more than unity

The Today newspaper has been giving fairly comprehensive and balanced coverage of activities in the Opposition camp in the run-up to the General Election (GE) widely expected to be held in May. The various parties have been scrambling to lay their claims to various Single Member Constituencies (SMCs) and Group Representation Constituencies (GRCs). Indications are that more parliamentary seats will be contested this time around, compared to the 2006 GE; there seem to be more parties now and more willing candidates. It is even possible that a few SMCs or a GRC or two will see three-cornered fights, if the Opposition parties cannot put the unity objective above individual preferences. Be that as it may, the parties opposing the ruling People's Action Party have to bear three important considerations in mind, if they are to make any real inroads among our younger, more sophist...
