Japan quake not expected to have huge impact on trade with S'pore: experts

SINGAPORE: Some economists said the earthquake in Japan is not expected to have a huge impact on trade with Singapore. However, as Japan is still the third largest economy globally, the closure of ports will cause a supply chain disruption. And while the manufacturing sector may be hit by a slowdown in exports, other service sectors such as retail could also feel the ripple effects. Economists said that Japan accounts for roughly six per cent of Singapore's trade. And as both countries are part of the global manufacturing supply chain link - the closure of airports and ports in Japan could affect particularly the tech sector in Singapore. In January, non oil domestic products to Japan expanded by 13 per cent but some economists said Singapore could see a slowdown in exports.
