Japanese earthquake won't affect food prices here

WHILE fruits from Japan such as peaches, strawberries and apples can be easily found on supermarket and fruit-stall shelves, Singaporeans need not worry that such fruit and vegetable prices will increase due to the earthquakes that hit northeastern Japan on Friday. While diverse sources helps Singapore maintain a resilient supply of food, this diversity also means that prices are kept competitive due to the nature of the market. Minister of State for Trade and Industry, Mr Lee Yi Shyan reassured Singaporeans that steps are being taken to keep the costs of fruit and vegetables affordable. 'What we can do is to continue to diversify our sources, so that we can get the best pricing out of competition. Going forward, we expect the prices of fruits and vegetables to remain stable.'
