Are you too shy? You could be classified as 'mentally ill'

LONDON - Shyness, bereavement and eccentric behaviour could be classed as a mental illness under a new international diagnostic manual, leaving millions of people at risk of being diagnosed as having a psychiatric disorder, specialists said on Thursday. Under changes planned to an upcoming revision of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM) of Mental Disorders, common behavioural traits are likely to be listed as a mental illness. The DSM5 could also list "gambling disorder" and "Internet addiction disorder" as medical problems. The DSM, published by the American Psychiatric Association, is used internationally and seen as the diagnostic "bible" for mental health medicine. Psychologists, psychiatrists and other experts said the new DSM5 categories were at best "silly" and, at worst, "worrying and dangerous".
