100 people set record for 'most people pounding with pestles and mortars'

SINGAPORE - A hundred people got into the Singapore Book of Records on Saturday for being the "most number of people pounding with pestles and mortars". They were preparing ingredients to make sambal belacan sauce, as part of a community carnival to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Muhammadiyah Welfare Home, a shelter and rehabilitation centre for youths at risk. The carnival started with a morning walk flagged off by Mr Ong Ye Kung, adviser to Kaki Bukit grassroots organisations. Speaker of Parliament Halimah Yacob, who was guest of honour for the event, officially opened the carnival in the afternoon. The welfare home currently houses about 70 residents aged nine to 19, including juvenile delinquents and those judged to be beyond parental control. It has helped more than 900 children and youths since its inception in 1989.
