In-flight text messaging in the pipeline

SINGAPORE: Travellers may soon be able to send SMSes through their own (GSM) handsets while on a flight. Singapore's research and development agency A*STAR has inked a deal with local aerospace firm Flight Focus to develop this technology. They will jointly pursue research to develop a next-generation cabin communication platform. It will enable in-flight cabin communications with various devices. The deal is part of A*STAR's efforts to grow Singapore's aviation industry. Under the agency's aerospace programme, a consortium was formed in 2007 with four members. The consortium offers aviation players opportunities to collaborate on research in the pre-competitive arena. Today, it has ballooned to 18 members and counts Embraer, ST Aerospace, Honeywell and General Electric as members.
