A growing aviation industry

Travellers may soon be able to send SMSes through their own GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) handsets while on a flight. The Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR)has inked a deal with local aerospace firm Flight Focus to develop this technology. They will jointly pursue research to develop a next-generation cabin communication platform which would enable in-flight cabin communications with various devices. The deal is part of A*STAR's efforts to grow Singapore's aviation industry. Under the agency's aerospace programme, a consortium was formed in 2007 with four members to offer aviation players opportunities to collaborate on research. Today, it has ballooned to 18 members and counts Embraer, ST Aerospace, Honeywell and General Electric as members.
