Singapore Red Cross, Japanese community to discuss relief efforts

The Japanese community here will meet the Red Cross today to look at ways to raise funds for disaster relief efforts in Japan. About 100 of the Japanese Association's 4,500 members have families in prefectures affected by the earthquake. A sombre mood prevailed yesterday afternoon at the Japanese Association along Adam Road, where fewer than usual members had turned up at the club. Many are believed to have stayed at home to keep in touch with families in Japan. "I am sure they are very, very worried," said Japanese Association secretary-general Kazuo Sugino. "At this moment, they are concentrating on collecting the information. I think they are trying to contact their relatives or parents in Japan."
