Massive earthquake that struck off coast of Japan has moved it 3.65m closer to North America

Apart from shifting the Earth on its axis and briefly speeding up its rotation, the massive earthquake that struck off the coast of Japan has moved parts of eastern Japan as much as 3.65m closer to North America, said US Geological Survey scientists. The quake shifted Japan's main island downwards about 60 centimetres and across by 2.4m. On Friday, scientists at NASA revealed that the quake shaved more than a microsecond from the day. The quake, which lasted about two minutes, sped up the earth's rotation by about 1.6 microseconds. (One microsecond is one-millionth of a second.) NASA said the quake shifted the Earth's mass, which caused the change in speed. Agencies
