One of my favourite things to do as a child was to tag along with Mum to the wet market. I was enthralled by the sights, sounds and smells: A clucking chicken, a bargaining housewife, chai tow kueh sizzling in a giant pan. We would spend about an hour weaving in and out amongst the stalls, examining the produce. Like any other self-respecting homemaker, she picked out only the freshest fish and greenest vegetables. Mum sure was picky about what she fed the family. I was most curious when Mum chose to buy eggs only from an old lady whose stall was tucked away in the corner of the market. It was dimly lit, and eggs that were a few days old were laid out in cartons. Regardless, the old lady remained the sole provider of eggs for the family for a long while.
