(TODAY) Lemon law proposed in Parliament, could take effect by Sept

SINGAPORE - Consumers can expect better protection against unfair business practices come September, if proposed changes to legislation are passed in Parliament. The proposed changes would pave the way for the introduction of a "lemon law", which will allow consumers to have a product replaced or repaired if a defect is found within six months of delivery. It would be assumed that the defect existed at the time of delivery, unless the retailer proves otherwise. This, in general, would not apply to goods with a short life span such as consumables and food. If the cost of repair outweighs the replacement, the retailer can choose to replace the product, and vice versa. If the retailer fails to repair or replace the product within a "reasonable time" or "without insignificant inconvenience" to the consumer, the consumer may ask for a reduction in price or return the product fo...
