WHEN most people are sleeping, Mr Morris Lim is up and about, and shopping. 'At night, I have the store all to myself,' said the marketing executive, eyeing a new $1,000 Sony camera last week at the Challenger tech store in Funan DigitaLife Mall, which has been open round the clock since the start of this month. The time was 3am. Mr Lim, 28, is not the typical shopper, but Challenger and a small number of other retailers are counting on people like him to make their 24/7 opening hours pay off. It seems like a leap in the dark. Staying open after midnight means extra costs in manpower, utilities and security. While shops can make do with fewer night-shift workers, they - like those at Challenger - need to be paid about 30 per cent more than day-time workers.
