Data roaming charges capped to S$100, no more unsolicited chargeable text messages by 2012

SINGAPORE - Mobile operators have until early next year to put in place measures to bar unsolicited chargeable text messages, otherwise known as premium rate services (PRS), the Infocomm Development Authority (IDA) of Singapore announced yesterday. The premium rate services include mobile ring tones, quizzes, information or game downloads that can typically cost about S$3 for each message received. The timeline was announced by IDA along with the rollout of more stringent penalties and rules for PRS providers. The move is part of a wider suite of initiatives revealed in Parliament last Thursday. For example, IDA will be stricter and consider suspending a PRS provider for at least six months for a third offence.
