AVA tests Japan's food exports; MFA advises deferring travel

SINGAPORE - The Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority of Singapore (AVA) said yesterday that it has increased its surveillance of food imports from Japan "to ensure that they are safe for consumption". In a statement, AVA said that, as a precautionary measure, samples of fresh produce exported from Japan after last Friday, such as seafood, fruits, vegetables and meat, "are being tested for radioactive contaminants with immediate effect". AVA said the impact of the disaster on Singapore's food supply is minimal: Last year, seafood imported from Japan constitutes less than 2 per cent of Singapore's total seafood imports by quantity. The import of other food products from Japan is less than 0.5 per cent.
