#SGBudget: GST relief for lower-income families

SINGAPORE - The government will introduce a permanent feature aimed at ensuring the Goods and Services Tax (GST) will not hurt the lower-income group. S$3.6 billion will be set aside over the next five years for the GST Voucher which will be embedded in the fiscal system. The voucher will fully offset the seven per cent GST that the lower half of retiree households pay on their expenses. For lower-income families who do not have elderly members, the vouchers will offset about half their total GST bills. But Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Tharman Shanmugaratnam said taking into account the other permanent benefits that this group will receive through Workfare, housing, education and healthcare, "they will get back much more than what they pay".
