US relief organisations say they have raised about $27.9 million in donations for aid to Japan

WASHINGTON - US RELIEF organisations said on Monday they had raised more than US$22 million (S$27.9 million) in donations for relief after Japan's disaster, with US companies also offering multimillion-dollar donations. The American Red Cross raised US$19 million as of 3pm (1700 GMT, 1am Singapore time), with US$1.6 million sent in US$10 donations by Americans text-messaging the number 90999, a spokesman for the organisation said. The American Red Cross said the funds would be sent to its Japanese sister organisation to support first aid, emotional support and relief for the displaced. Among other groups raising funds, Save the Children said it had raised US$3.2 million dollars around the world - US$2.7 million of it in the United States - and the Salvation Army said it had collected US$980,009.
