Budget policies will hit SME hiring

I REFER to this year's Government Budget. As a small food-and-beverage business owner, I have been facing a hiring problem. Locals, especially, seem to avoid service industry jobs that may require long working hours. They want jobs with higher pay but less work. To overcome this, I rely on part-timers and older part-time workers. The challenge is that most part-timers are students on holiday. Every time they leave, I need to find replacements. While the latter are being trained, it affects the quality of my food and service. Another problem is the inconsistent attendance, as the part-timers have school projects and activities. The older workers are very good in their work, but the increase in Central Provident Fund contributions will increase costs, on top of high rents and increasing food costs. F&B businesses would have to raise food prices to make a sustainable profit. ...
