China reports foot-and-mouth outbreak in cows

BEIJING (REUTERS) - China has found foot-and-mouth disease among cattle in a north-western region but has already destroyed the affected animals, state media reported on Wednesday. The virus was detected in four cows in Ningxia, Xinhua news agency reported, citing the Ministry of Agriculture. 'All infected cattle, as well as 22 others that had been raised among them, have been culled and properly disposed of,' it said. 'The epidemic has been contained.' Foot-and-mouth disease is a highly infectious and sometimes fatal disease that affects cloven-hoofed animals.
