Taxis should come with COEs to curb drivers from using it as their private car: Voices
I mostly agree with the letter "Reduced parking should bring benefits to commuters" (Feb 7). But I disagree that taxis should come without Certificates of Entitlement. This would lead to abuse, as many cabbies often use their taxis as if it is their private car. Singapore has 27,000 taxis, but how many are on our roads at any time? Most cabbies are allowed to drive their taxis home, but one finds countless taxis in heartland car parks day or night. Some cabbies also have no relief drivers. That is one of the main reasons we find it hard to get a taxi. Without COEs for taxis, there may be more cabbies but fewer taxis available.
