"Light", "low-tar" & "mild" will no longer be allowed on tobacco packaging from Mar 2013

SINGAPORE - From March next year, misleading descriptors such as "light", "low-tar" and "mild" will no longer be allowed on tobacco packaging, while a new set of graphic health warnings will be extended to the outer packaging of tobacco products. The maximum tar and nicotine limits will also be lowered, and a new health information requirement will replace the current requirement to print tar and nicotine yield levels. Cigarillos will also have to be sold in packs of 20 instead of the current 10 to discourage smoking experimentation. These four new tobacco control measures, aimed at curbing smoking, will be rolled out by the Health Promotion Board (HPB), in partnership with the Health Sciences Authority (HSA), under the amendments to the Tobacco (Control of Advertisements and Sale) Act.
