Animal cruelty is on the rise in Singapore, and pet owners are the main culprits

Cruelty cases include failure to provide pets with adequate care, leaving them outdoors without proper shelter, and keeping dogs on short leashes for extended periods. -- PHOTO: SPCA Cases of animal cruelty have gone up over the last five years, said the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA). Last year, the animal welfare group received 1,027 complaints - a 10 per cent increase from the year before - from the public. At least 70 per cent of the complaints involved pet owners who failed to provide adequate care - such as keeping their cats caged up and dogs leashed for long periods or leaving their pets outdoors unattended. The remaining cases involved outright cruelty, said SPCA executive director Corinne Fong.
