Pet neglect is on the rise, with the SPCA reporting a 10 per cent increase from 2010

SINGAPORE - Pet neglect is on the rise here, with the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) receiving reports of 1,027 cases of alleged cruelty to animals last year. This represents a 10-per-cent increase from the cases it investigated in 2010. Pet inspectors from the SPCA found that 70 per cent of last year's cases were due to "wilful" neglect of the animals in terms of food, hygiene, living or medical condition. And despite advice from its inspectors, less than 30 per cent of the owners investigated made improvements to the living conditions of their pets, citing reasons such as lack of time and long working hours. Ms Corinne Fong, SPCA's executive director, told Today that "many owners want to enjoy the perceived fun experience of owning a pet but are not bothered to accept or take on the accompanying responsibility ... it doesn't seem to cross the mind of...
