Manufacturing down 8.8% in January, electronics slump continues

On a seasonally adjusted month-on-month basis, manufacturing output increased 3.3 per cent in January 2012, the Singapore Economic Development Board (EDB) announced on Friday. -- ST PHOTO: JEROME MING GR By Lo Yee Manufacturing output for January posted a decline of 8.8 per cent from the same month a year earlier, amid global economic uncertainties and the shedding of activities during Chinese New Year. Excluding biomedical manufacturing, output fell by 15.3 per cent. Weak export demand meant the slump in electronics continued, falling by 28.4 per cent on a year-on-year basis. General manufacturing shrank 7.9 per cent, dipping into the red after two consecutive months of positive figures. This was mainly due to plant shutdowns during the Chinese New Year period.
