MPs want to know impact of rising costs on senior citizens

SINGAPORE : It is a question gaining in relevance, given the ageing population: How does the rising cost of living affect senior citizens compared to the rest of the population? And a group of Members of Parliament (MPs) wants the Ministry of Trade and Industry (MTI) to capture and provide this information. A report by the eight-member Estimates Committee, which studies the government's annual spending estimates, revealed that the ministry is already "exploring the feasibility of compiling an experimental Consumer Price Index (CPI) for households headed by persons aged 65 years and over". But the committee led by MP Ahmad Magad said this should be done for all households comprising senior citizens.
