New funding scheme for schools to carry out arts development projects

SINGAPORE: The National Arts Council has introduced a funding scheme for schools to carry out arts development projects. Each project will receive up to S$20,000 over two years and the scheme is open to recipients of the National Arts Education Awards. The awards framework has been changed to encourage greater participation. At Paya Lebar Methodist Girls' Secondary School (PLMGSS), students are literally surrounded by the sound of music. Besides lunchtime concerts, music is weaved into daily assembly time and accompanies students in their morning reading sessions. The approach applies to art as well, where works by students are displayed proudly along the corridors. The school wants to go beyond developing an appreciation of art.
