Singapore Red Cross Society to coordinate relief efforts here for Japan disaster

SINGAPORE - The Singapore Red Cross Society will lead other agencies to kick-start the Republic's relief efforts for Japan - with S$500,000 as seed money from the Singapore Government to send items such as blankets, mattresses and water bottles. The society, which has also received about S$100,000 in donations from the public, hopes to send the first batch of items by tomorrow, said chairman Tee Tua Ba yesterday at a press conference. Separately, non-government organisation Mercy Relief will send 20,000 packs of ready-to-eat porridge and 20 paddle-powered water systems, said its chief executive Hassan Ahmad. Ambassador-At-Large Chew Tai Soo, who is coordinating the relief efforts, noted that the scale of the operations will be smaller than what it was in the aftermath of the Indonesian tsunami in December 2004.
