Thai king blames "greedy" civil servants for deforestation that caused recent flooding

BANGKOK - Thailand's revered King Bhumibol Adulyadej has expressed concern about deforestation and the resultant flooding in Thailand, urging the government to plant more trees and take harsh punitive steps against "greedy" civil servants who allowed illegal deforestation to occur. The King was speaking to Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra and members of the Strategic Formulation Committee for Water Resource Management at Siriraj Hospital on Friday, where he was presented with the committee's report on urgent water management and flood prevention plans. The King, who is recognised as an expert in water and flood management, said last year's disastrous flooding was due to deforestation, and laid the blame for the destruction of Thailand's forests and consequent natural disasters on greedy state officials.
