Colorectal cancer cases on the rise in Singapore, nine in ten affected over the age of 50

SINGAPORE - The number of colorectal cancer cases is on the rise in Singapore. Latest figures show that in the last five years ending 2010, there were over 8,206 cases, compared to about 7,900 cases from 2005 to 2009. Nearly nine out of 10 cases were diagnosed when the patient was 50 years old. The figures were obtained from the Singapore Cancer Registry Interim Report. The Singapore Cancer Society aims to encourage those over 50 to conduct annual screening for colorectal cancer using its free faecal occult blood test kits. Those who test positive for blood in the stools will be referred to hospitals for colonoscopy and further tests. CHANNEL NEWSASIA
