Lufthansa cancels 140 flights at Frankfurt airport

FRANKFURT: German airline Lufthansa said it cancelled around 140 flights taking off and landing at Frankfurt airport, Europe's third busiest, on Monday, owing to renewed strikes by tarmac workers there. The airline, which has its main base in Frankfurt, also said it expected to cancel a similar number of services again on Tuesday. Some 200 apron control staff -- who direct aircraft in and out of their parking positions -- have been striking since February 16. They want higher pay, increased bonuses and shorter working hours. Talks with airport operator Fraport broke down Friday, opening the path for a new strike, which got under way at 2000 GMT on Sunday and is expected to last until 0400 GMT on Thursday.
