Radiation: What you need to know

What level of radiation is dangerous to people? People are exposed to natural radiation of about 2 millisieverts (mSv) a year. A typical chest X-ray involves exposure of about 0.1 mSv. Exposure to 100 mSv a year is the lowest level at which any increase in cancer is clearly evident. A single 1,000 mSv dose causes radiation sickness but not death. A single dose of 5,000 mSv would kill about half of those exposed to it within a month. What happens when you are exposed to radiation? Exposure to high levels of radiation can cause acute radiation syndrome (ARS), or radiation poisoning, resulting in substantial damage to human body tissues, premature ageing and possibly death.
