The Singapore Government donated $500,000 to the Singapore Red Cross to help relief efforts in Japan

THE Singapore Government on Tuesday donated $500,000 to the Singapore Red Cross Society as seed money to help in relief efforts in Japan. Mr Chew Tai Soo, former ambassador to Japan and now an ambassador-at-large, was also appointed by Foreign Affairs Minister George Yeo to be the coordinator of Singapore's efforts to support the Japanese. The Red Cross started accepting donations on Tuesday and collected $100,000. The single largest donation was about $10,000. On Tuesday, Japanese Ambassador to Singapore Yoichi Suzuki called on Mr Yeo to express his appreciation for Singapore's support in the relief operations. A Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) statement said that Mr Yeo conveyed his deepest sympathies to Mr Suzuki and 'the full solidarity' of Singaporeans and the Government in this time of crisis.
