Hri Kumar Nair suggests more measures for elderly
SINGAPORE: MP for Bishan-Toa Payoh GRC Hri Kumar Nair said more could be done to help the elderly unlock their savings. He suggested lower concessionary property taxes for retired couples owning private property. Mr Nair also urged the government to give older Singaporeans greater flexibility than what's available under the current lease buy-back scheme. He reiterated an earlier call made to allow Singaporeans to sell back portions of their lease to the Housing Board, so older citizens can get money to help with daily expenses. In addition, Mr Nair called for more elderly-friendly public infrastructure. "I urge the government to start a pilot project to install selected overhead bridges with lifts, and assess the impact. I know this will be expensive, but I believe it will be worth the price to help the elderly be more mobile and independent," said Mr Nair.
